Finding the Best Treatment
We know more today than ever before about the treatment of acne. A wide range of acne medications make it possible for virtually every case of acne to be successfully treated and for you to help your teen achieve clear, healthy skin.
When choosing an acne treatment you will want to consider different options.
OTC Products
You will find several over-the-counter (OTC) products that may help to reduce bacteria and oil on the skin. These topical medications are available as creams, gels, lotions, soaps or pads. If you are concerned about your teen's acne, don't hesitate to make an appointment with a dermatologist.
See a Dermatologist
The dermatologist will review your teen's condition and give serious consideration to the cause, type and severity of acne as well as to the type of skin he or she has. The degree of severity will help to determine whether the dermatologist will prescribe an acne medication or a combination of medications.
Prescription acne medications may contain antibiotics to help minimize bacteria and or other active ingredients that help to clear pores and treat new blemishes.
Our dermatologist assesment tool may help you decide if your teen might benefit from seeing a dermatologist about their acne.
Achieving Clear Skin
These three goals are the cornerstone of any acne therapy
- Get rid of acne lesions (pimples)
- Stop new lesions from forming
- Prevent scarring
It is imperative that your teen use the medications only as directed and on a consistent basis.
Overuse can lead to skin irritation, and in some instances other side effects. In the case of antibiotics, improper use could lead to the development of bacterial resistance to the drug.
Sooner is Better
The sooner your teen can treat his or her acne the better. Earlier attention may reduce the risk of scarring. However it is never too late. There are a host of medications that can help treat acne and there are medical procedures that can often lessen the appearance of scars.
